I was just listening to music while working on something and a Yo La Tengo song came on - Stockholm Syndrome. I've listened to I can hear the heart beating as one many times before, but I never really noticed that it wasn't the usual vocalist on this track, so I took to Wikipedia to check it out. It's their long time bassist singing on this one, James McNew.
I saw a picture of him and it was one of those times where the face just didn't seem to quite match the voice, so I took to Youtube.
I found a great quality video of YLT playing the song in a studio, I hit play, and was just mesmerised, enjoying a wonderful recording of a beautiful song - until the 1:24 mark. Ira Kaplan abruptly stomps on a pedal (or several?) and just goes wild on his guitar. The album version of this song has a little solo guitar part, so it wasn't totally unexpected, but holy shit! I wasn't expecting that!
Brought quite the smile to my face. Great stuff.
